4-Channel, 4-Wavelength WDM with Gigabit Multimode Extender
(GMX) Trunk
The Fiber Driver? WDM45/GMX, combining advanced Coarse
Wave Division Multiplexer (CWDM) technology and MRV Communications'
award-winning Gigabit Multimode Extender (GMX) technology, carries four separate
data channels with an aggregate bandwidth of 4 Gbps (8 Gbps at Full Duplex) to a
guaranteed distance of 2 km over a Multimode fiber link.
The physical
properties of Multimode fiber typically limits Gigabitspeed transmissions to a
distance of 550 meters or less, far shorter than the 2-kilometer standard when
Multimode fiber is used for transmitting protocols such as FDDI and Fast
Ethernet. This fact has left IT managers that need to upgrade their network in
order to use Gigabit protocols with little choice but to abandon their Multimode
fiber and install new Singlemode (SM) fiber. However, the GMX technology,
available exclusively in the Fiber Driver product line and incorporated into the
WDM45/GMX, gives network administrators another option.
This achievement
brings new life to existing Multimode (MM) fiber plants, making it possible to
greatly increase network capacity while avoiding the cost, complications and
lead times associated with the installation of new fiber. With support for
Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, FICON, and other protocols, the WDM45/GMX is
ideal for high-speed LAN, Metro Area Network (MAN), and Storage Area Network
(SAN) applications. It provides a clear migration path to new technologies while
protecting the investment in existing fiber. |
