Gigabit Ethernet Testing Information
Gigabit Ethernet is basically an evolution of Fast Ethernet. While nothing changed in the applications, the speed of the network obviously changed and therefore the cabling requirements. Gigabit Ethernet maintains the same general frame structure as the 10Mbps networks and therefore implementation into existing networks is seamless.
The Gigabit Ethernet standard supports 850 and 1300 nm multimode technologies, as well as singlemode fiber under 1000BASE-SX (850 nm) and 1000BASE-LX (1300 nm). Although most of the medium to carry Gigabit Ethernet is fiber, a IEEE 802.3ab standard (1000Base-T) was released in 1999 that describes Gigabit Ethernet over UTP copper. The 1000Base-T standard employs full or half duplex transmission over 4 pairs of balanced cabling, with each pair transmitting at 250Mbps.
In Gigabit Ethernet it is vital to consider the CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection) mechanism. This dictates that the worst-case round-trip delay on a network be less or equal to the transmission time of the shortest legal frame ("slot time" of 512 bit). As a 64 byte frame transmitted at 1000Mbps can barely cover 100 meters of cable, a carrier extension is used that basically extends the slot time to 4096 bit, thus extending the range of the network. The carrier extension is only required in half-duplex operation. It also adds overhead to the transmission of a frame. This become very noticeable with short frames. Therefore "Packet Bursting" was introduced, that enables a sending station to transmit a series of frames (up to 8192 bytes) without giving up control of the medium.
The main difference between Gigabit Ethernet and 10Mbps/100Mbps Ethernet actually lies in the physical layer of the OSI Model as it is this layer that actually controls the transmission through the medium
Testing Gigabit Ethernet over Copper
Two areas of testing can be identified: physical fault-tolerance and fault management.
First of all it is worthwhile to test the Spanning Tree protocol that is implemented in the switch that you use in your network. Almost all vendors specify a Spanning Tree protocol that detects loops in networks and disables one port on the network to prevent a broadcast storm. Typically loops get designed into the network to increase fault-tolerance and Spanning Tree will detect network failures and route around them on redundant loops. Spanning Tree actually also provides fault-tolerance by activating a back-up link should the primary link on the network go down. The Spanning Tree failover time is a key metric for network performance. It also plays a role at system reboot as it needs to be initialized. Most switch manufacturers will allow you to "tweak" the Spanning Tree protocol or have implemented advanced Spanning Tree protocols, shortening the failover time. This can be up to 50 seconds if no precautions are taken.
To test the QoS (Quality of Service) you can "oversubscribe" the network with a Traffic Generator and subsequently analyze network performance.
It is also worthwhile to verify that no reliability is sacrificed to the physical layer. According to the IEEE standard, Gigabit Ethernet is designed to run over standard CAT 5 structured cabling, although it can be extremely susceptible to noise then. To stress the physical medium you can again use a Traffic Generator to load the network. Next you install two Devices Under Test at different locations in the network and observe error counts. Subsequently, the stress level of testing can be increased by testing additional runs simultaneously. When running these tests it is very important to verify the quality of the patch cords and patch ports. The acceptable level of error count will have to be determined, but it should be noted that errors degrade throughput and increase the total number of network errors. Furthermore it will be useful to make sure you test the different lengths in the network. When pushing the specification (100 meters) you may actually see intermittent errors that were nonexistent at shorter distances.
Testing Gigabit Ethernet over Fiber
There are four ways to test fiber-optic cable plants, three with meters and sources, and one with an OTDR. The "source and meter" methods (also called "insertion loss" tests), approximate the way the network equipment actually uses the fiber. As a result the measured loss will be similar to the actual network loss. The OTDR, however, uses backscattered light to determine the loss in the cable. As a result this indirect test method can show significant deviations from the insertion loss tests. The differences in the three "source and meter" tests are in how the "0 dB" (no loss) is defined. Basically all three use the same test setup. The reference power can however be set with one, two or three reference cables. These reference cables are used to allow testing of the connectors on each end of the fiber. Coupling fibers directly to the source or meter will result in to an incorrect indication of the loss of the connectors. The test method required by EIA/TIA 568 requires the one-cable reference method, in which the launch reference cable is attached to the source and then connected to the meter. The measured output then becomes the zero-loss reference. Subsequently, all the losses in the cable plant are measured directly when the source is coupled through the launch reference cable to the cable plant and the meter is connected directly at the receive side.
