Optical Power Ground Wire (OPTGWos OPGW ) is a dual functioning cable that performs the duties of a ground wire - also known as static wire - while providing a path for the transmission of voice, video or data signals by incorporating optical fibers into the design of the cable.Fujikura Telecommunications is the world's leading supplier of OPT-GW. OPTGW is placed at the highest point on power utility structures, allowing for fast, cost-effective installations and extraordinary reliability.Optical Ground wire cables or OPGW cables are extensively applied by electric utility industries to protect the conductors in transmission lines from lightning. These cables also provide a path for internal telecommunication as well as that with third parties. The purpose of OPGW is to replace earth or static wires in overhead transmission lines and bear mechanical stresses caused through ice or wind. OPGW also takes care of electrical faults in transmission lines, since it charts a path to the ground without destroying the optical fibers in the cables.

Laser Welded Fiber Optic Tubes

As the inventor and owner of the technology for placing optical fibers into stainless steel tubes, AFL Telecommunications offers a range of tube sizes and fiber counts for a variety of applications. Each tube is flooded with a Thixotropic filling compound and hermetically sealed to protect the enclosed fibers from environmental degradation. AFL’s stainless steel tubes are suitable for use as a component in aerial applications such as Optical Ground Wire or for buried applications. Typical excess fiber length values are 0.30% with higher values available upon request.
