Fiber to the X

Fiber-to-the-X (FTTX) refers to several marketplaces, Fiber-to-the-Curb/Business/Home, and others.  In every case, the fiber-optic network penetrates deep towards the customer, and in some cases customer service is delivered directly over fiber-optic cabling (FTTH and FTTB, for example).  FTTX operators face many challenges, regulatory, logistical and physical, when deploying these networks.  In order to justify the expense of deploying deep fiber access, the revenue return must be substantial.  Thus FTTX operators must deploy a variety of services, voice, video and data, at provide value added services as well, including bandwidth services and, in some cases, content as well (such as video-on-demand or gaming).  MRV, through its Luminent subsidiary, is one of the world leaders in FTTX components, making MRV quite familiar with FTTX networks.

MRV provides a unique FTTX solution, the CM316-FTTX, the Fiber Driver SFP Managed Optical Termination Unit (MOTU) for Fiber-to-the-X (FTTX) networks. This product delivers configurable service, up to 100Mbps Ethernet, together with a wide array of management features that service providers require, all without the need to upgrade any equipment at the central office. And all of this is accomplished in a small customer premise equipment (CPE) form factor with low power consumption.

One key aspect of FTTX is the ability to provide single-fiber solutions.  The combination of MRV's OptiSwitchT line of Ethernet switching and routing products and FiberDriverT line of physical layer transport products provides solutions for the central office and all types of customer premises, including curbside, small business and MTU/MDU environments.  The OptiSwitchT Ethernet Circuit technology also provides a complete solution for bandwidth control and for security in FTTX environments, allowing the FTTX provider to offer value-added business services.  The OptiSwitchT is a highly flexible and modular family of switching and routing products ranging from a few ports of 100Base-FX to hundreds of Gigabit Ethernet ports, providing the flexibility to scale-as-you-grow the FTTX network.  MRV solutions also include full fiber-optic redundancy for mission-critical customers.

Another important aspect of FTTX networks is protocol independence.  The FiberDriver products include a range of distance extenders, and repeaters for virtually every data, voice and video networking protocol imaginable.  Customers can choose LAN, SAN or WAN protocols, including Ethernet, TDM voice, SONET, ATM, FiberChannel, ESCON, or FICON to connect from location to location.  FiberDriver also provides a complete Wave-Division Multiplexing (WDM) solution to aggregate multiple wavelengths, either with the same or different protocols onto a single fiber or fiber-pair.

FTTX networks, by their very nature, are spread out over a large geographic area.  The network management process in this case can be complicated and cumbersome.  For that reason, MRV provides the MegaVision WebT Network Management System, together with the In-ReachT and LX Remote Presence Management solutions.  Using MegaVision and In-Reach, the task of operations support is centralized and simplified.  Remote Presence technology allows the administrator to securely access any part of the network either in-band (through the network itself) or out-of-band (through the telephony network) for management purposes.  MRV's solution even includes the ability to manage the power connections of remote network infrastructure equipment, so that an administrator can force an unresponsive machine at the customer's location to power-cycle without ever leaving the office.
