ISP

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have grown from providing banks of modems and a connection to the Internet for a few users at a time to full service web hosting data centers and content providers connecting millions of customers to the World Wide Web.  Most ISPs still use modem-banks, at least as a fallback or for traveling customers, but many are now connected to carriers and the Internet via large OC-12 or Gigabit Ethernet links.  Medium and large ISPs have many points-of-presence (POPs) in a regional area, and some have their own private backbone transport network.  ISPs now face the challenge of managing these large data center networks, and controlling the access bandwidth of their customers.

MRV provides a full solution for the network infrastructure of ISPs.  For data center switching, the OptiSwitchT family provides a scalable, cost-effective method of interconnecting large numbers of servers at wire speed.  The OptiSwitchT routers, together with core IP routing products from MRV's Charlotte's Networks subsidiary, also provide from hundreds of Megabits to hundreds of Gigabits of wire-speed IP routing capability, so an ISP of any size can stay with MRV products throughout their life cycle, from a local provider to an international conglomerate.  The OptiSwitchT Ethernet Circuit technology also provides complete control over the customer bandwidth usage, and provides full intrusion detection and security capabilities, preventing attacks and resource stealing from unauthorized customers.  MRV's products fully support all the necessary IP routing protocols to hand off data traffic to other ISPs, including MPLS and BGP-4.  Packet-over-SONET interfaces are also available in case the carrier connects with SONET instead of Ethernet technology.

In large data center networks, the server management process can be complicated and cumbersome.  For this reason, MRV provides the In-ReachT and LX Remote Presence Management solutions.  Using In-Reach, the task of managing huge numbers of servers is centralized and simplified.  Remote Presence technology allows the administrator to securely access any part of the network either in-band (through the network itself) or out-of-band (through the telephony network) for management purposes.  The In-Reach and LX Secure Console Servers allow large numbers of 'headless' servers (servers without monitors) to be managed through serial communications from a central point.  MRV's solution even includes the ability to manage the power connections of remote servers, so that an administrator can force a crashed server to power-cycle without ever leaving the office.

To tie all of these tools together, MRV provides the MegaVision WebT Network Management System.  MegaVision fully manages all of MRV and 3rd party products, and allows simple configuration and event monitoring with a web based GUI.  MegaVision can easily be used to view server and network availability from a central point, and to collect alarms and faults from In-Reach and LX equipment managing the data center.
